Word Of The Year “F”udged Again

Both Websters & WSJ’s Henninger got it wrong on naming THE word for 2022. The honor surely goes to an “F” word that was used more often this year by celebs, comics & pols than Biden gaffed or Trump cried stolen.

As Mr. Henninger noted, the dictionary people chose as its 2022 word of the year “gaslighting”, which he surmises “has something to do with ‘misinformation,’ which itself is said to be different from ‘disinformation.’ True, “gaslighting” appeared in numerous MSM articles as a shorthand for criticizing someone without running afoul of the fact-checkers. But, as Henninger suggests, no one really knows what the vague term really means. So, why the honor? Yet, the columnist also arguably misses the mark by saying “the real word of the year is ‘identity’ because of Russia’s attempt to wipe out Ukraine’s culture. Again, it’s true that “identity” was used profusely last year to advocate or criticize all sorts of political ideologies besides the Russian-Ukraine War. But, again, the term seems to have been abused by now as much as used, its meaning twisted to fit this, that or the other narrative so badly that it’s possible fewer and fewer people are understanding its definition as well.

But, the “F” word that may have been uttered in public as well as in private circles more often during 2022 than “gaslighting” and “identity” combined? At least, we all know what it means. Right, Brandon?
