Red Flag Laws Need Data Teeth Post-Uvalde?

WSJ’s Holman Jenkins makes point “Red Flag Laws Are As Good as the Data” & as Ulvade tragedy showed AGAIN, “School shooters only hide their intensions from those who aren’t looking.” He suggests the law needs bite.

Especially with today’s social media dominating our lives … and the lives of shooters looking to verbally express their evil before acting it out … Mr. Holman explains it’s near IMPOSSIBLE for SOMEBODY not to see ticking time bombs among us. Moreover, he adds, Joe Biden or Beto O’Rourke are delusional in calling for gun control in pending HR 8 that WOULD NOT HAVE AFFECTED THE UVLADE horror or put a dent the 10-20 million semi-automatic weapons legally sold every year. BUT, Mr. Holman argues, there’s no longer any excuse for SOMEONE … parent, neighbor, school official, law enforcer … not to see a seriously problemed kid & taking action under more effective Red Flag laws.

The typical gun-fetishizing, mass shooter-admiring obsessive copycat, Holman says, will betray himself. “This has been made clear in excruciating episode after excruciating episode. As the Texas atrocity showed again, killers of this ilk ADVERTISE their inclinations online & offline. They advertise their acquisition of weapons. They give voice to their threats …” YET … “Red flag laws are only as good as the evidence that causes somebody, often police, to invoke them.” Mr. Holman calls for a “Google Mass Shooter Profiling Tool” with MANY data points to help ferret out & disarm you know who. Watch pro-gun control ACLU cry “Constitution” when it comes to such weaponized Red Flag laws?
