Reports Of Post-Covid Psychosis Rare, But Troubling

Doctors have warned from the pandemic’s get go that Covid-19, although often “asymptomatic,” could cause some long-term problems in a few victims. Now, the Chicago Tribune ran a chilling piece titled, “After Covid-19 came panic and paranoia.” It focuses on the suicide of a downstate businessman & argues how the man’s death “shines a spotlight on a rare but serious condition: Post-COVID psychosis.”

The article concedes the “evidence is thin” to rate this suspected phenomenon a “psychosis” and there’s “no way to know how many might have been impacted. Yet, we’re told there’s “growing evidence” that whatever’s going on may be caused by the Covid-19 virus itself rather than ordinary psychological stress. One suspicious thread in the psychosis trail is that it is marked by panic & paranoia. That’s apparently what happened to this Morris, Illinois husband and father of two who came down with Covid-19 and after being “cured” with the help of Remdecivir; he started having panic attacks & irrational worries about his business, until he took his life.

Researchers had already been looking into Covid’s long-term effects on the brain & central nervous system. A recent Northwestern study of Covid survivors with lingering symptom found that 85% of them say they still have 4 or more neurological symptoms like “brain fog” (attn. & memory loss), loss of taste or smell, headache & blurred vision. That’s not Post-Covid Psychosis, yet a British study reported 10 out of 153 patients with neurological or psychiatric symptoms came down with some kind of “new onset psychosis.” Dr. Royce Lee, an assoc professor of psychiatry at University of Chicago warned: “We’ve seen a few cases where we can be certain COVID is causing the psychiatric illness & we’ve seen tens of cases where we suspect that’s true.” Can Covid (or, its “cure”) cause damaging brain lesions? Can it trigger an immune system response that attacks rather than helps the brain in some? Or, could there be a genetic link? Dr. House?
