Lost in the debate over DOE’s alleged failure to help educate kids, is reality that many “students” are ILLITERATE upon graduating high school. How could that be? Two lawsuits against separate school districts allegedly reveal a “blind eye” policy of some “educators.”
It was a recent Fox News story based on an interview with Cornell Law School Professor William Jacobson that warned of a “much deeper problem” with the American public school system. It seems two high school graduates are suing mad because, they claim, they can’t read or write & were not given the public education they and their parents were promised. Says Jacobson, “For each of these cases, there are probably tens of thousands of students who never got a proper education .... Unfortunately, we’ve created incentives, particularly for public school systems, to just push students along and not to hold them accountable.” The problem has even gotten an assist from high tech, as it is suggested, more students are using AI generated research to get A grades, even though they can’t read what they’ve submitted to their teachers.
The Trump White House, of course, is hopping mad about the situation & is moving to dismantle the Department of Education for its perceived failure & complicit involvement in the educational dilemma. According to one fact sheet, “Since 1979, the DOE has spent over $3 trillion with virtually nothing to show for it … Despite per-pupil spending having increased by more than 245% over that period, there has been virtually no measurable improvement in student achievement: Math & reading scores for 13-year-olds are at the lowest level in decades … seven in ten fourth & eighth graders are not proficient in reading, while 40% of fourth grade students don’t even meet basic reading levels.”
