RSV No Invitation To Let Guard Down If Kid Covid Free

Colorado docs are warning RSV, not Omicron, is the most common virus spreading among kids & parents with negative Covid test results in hand should not relax too much. While generally a “mild” virus, the lesser-known RSV, like flu, still does kill up to 500 infants annually.

It was a local radio station that first quoted Dr. Reginald Washington, the chief medical officer at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, saying the “very contagious” Respiratory Syncytial Virus is spreading more among children in and around the “Denver area’s school systems and daycare centers” than the coronavirus. Fox News noted how RSV “causes infections of the respiratory tract” and typically starts with a sore throat. Infants and seniors are at the highest risk of severe infection, while it can make it difficult to breathe for some children.” According to the CDC, RSV “causes between 100-500 deaths each year among children younger than 5 yrs old … and … about 14K death each year among adults over the age of 65.”

Dr. Washington also advised: “The one thing I’m concerned about is if a parent gets a test on their child for COVID and it’s negative, they assume they can let their guard down when they really can’t because these other viruses can be equally as serious.”
