Saving Higher Education By Holding On To Wallets
“A fool & his money are soon parted” is the proverbial lesson urged in the WSJ op ed “Sorry, Professor, We’re Cutting You Off.” The author, John Ellis, a prof himself at U of California at Santa Cruz, has long concluded “Funding higher education now means subsidizing the political activists who have hijacked it.” He noted an 11% drop in parents & kids wising up & finding other ways to launch good-paying & inspiring careers. I have another idea. But, first, let Professor Ellis elaborate:
“The current political uniformity of college faculty illustrates … an enormous detour from the institutional mission granted to higher education by society [i.e., instill in our youth critical, analytical thinking] … It meets the needs of the substitute purpose [e.g., instilling PC, cancel culture & a singular commitment to a unitary progressive gospel], but only by annihilating the authorized one…Analytical thinking requires exploring a range of alternatives, but political crusades require the opposite: exclusive belief & commitment. That’s how far off course academia has gone in its capricious self-repurposing,” society & its stakeholders be damned.
Professor Ellis says the obvious thing to do is to “take back the money & redirect it to its proper purpose” & readily concedes it can be easier said than done. Still, he cited the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center’s 2011 enrollment numbers compared to 2019, which showed a more than 2 million drop in attendance. But, alas, the already lost exorbitant tuition & fees can (& largely have) been more than made up for with even more exorbitant tuition & fees. My thought: Further cut the leftist academics off at the knees via alums & parents of grads no longer “donating” additional money after death as well as when alive. True, the money gougers will go to the feds they are trying to control (& often do) with even greater zeal. So, taxpayers, maybe stop contributing to the pols in bed with Eileen Bach University?
