Serial Illegal Acquitted In Steinle Death

The illegal acquitted in Kate Steinle’s 2015 shooting death got out of the can for time served on federal weapons charges? Was judge’s “last” warning to serial border crasher not to come back yet again worth his breath?

Remember, Garcia-Zarate had been deported from the US FIVE times before acknowledging he held the gun that killed Steinle, insisting through an interpreter it “accidentally” fired after mindlessly picking it up from under a bench and as the victim walked by. The excuse worked in “sanctuary” San Francisco as a state jury acquitted Garcia-Zarate of murder in 2017, but convicted him of being a felon possessing a weapon. The state conviction was later overturned, yet the feds held him on federal weapons charges for the next several years while shrinks argued whether he was schizophrenic and competent to stand another trial.

Finally, last June, US District Court Judge Vince Chhabria ruled Garcia-Zarate was, indeed, able to be tried in federal court and, lo and behold, the defendant was ready to plea bargain his release for time spent in somebody’s custody and out of harm’s way. “If you return to this country again and you are back in front of me, I will not spare you,” Judge Chhabria said at Monday’s sentencing hearing. (Fox News noted: Actually, “the 51-yr-old Mexican national will now be transported to Texas to face charges for failing to report his location to immigration officials in a separate case.”)
