Six Phillies’ Brain Cancer Deaths A Cluster?

Dr. Marc Siegel urges the statistically remarkable deaths of six former Phillies players be investigated as especially most recent death of 57-yr-old pitcher David West “leads to questions about Veterans Stadium” itself …

The Fox News’ medical contributor explains the string of brain cancer deaths of ex-Philly players constitutes a cluster. “The amount of incidents of deadly brain cancer are [usually] about 3 out of 100,000,” he notes, but “this is three or four times that or more.” West pitched for the Phillies from 1993-96. Other deaths included Ken Brett in 2003, Tug McGraw & Johnny Oates in 2004, John Vukovich in 2007 and Darren Daulton in 2017.

According to Siegel, radar guns used behind home plate during this period is one possible cause while “many have speculated that the since-demolished Veterans Stadium may have played a role,” particularly the “chemicals used in old Astroturf …” Yet, it’s also been noted that “former ground crew workers” have not died of brain cancer as did the baseball players, nor have former Philadelphia Eagles players who played in the same stadium, if not nearly as many times.
