Sports Covid Bans Continue But Can Anyone Say Why?
Even tho no active & healthy US pro athlete has died from Covid, the WSJ suggests the sporting industry’s draconian lockdown mentality remains virulent. The paper even hints it should continue that way, despite the discovery of effective vaccines. In a recent article noting how many vaccinated athletes still test positive for Covid, it soberly notes: “Vaccines are very effective at preventing death and severe illness from the disease – but, they’re not foolproof in preventing infection.”
If the first part is true, though, is anyone asking why so many games keep getting postponed and/or players are being banned from competition? Especially since, “most of the athletes with so-called ‘breakthrough’ infections are asymptomatic,” that is, the symptoms are hardly even noticed? The WSJ does sort of address that head scratching irony by reciting the old [and getting ancient] talking point that “many questions about Covid remain,” and “in the case of [big events like] the Olympics, they could trigger an outbreak in the surrounding Japanese population or beyond, to any of the 200 participating nations – in addition to creating chaos in competitions.” In fact, the head of Tokyo 2020 mouthed exactly that worry before adding he’d ban fans if the “very dire” worst happens…
Now, THAT’s a scary-sounding thought. But, is it yet another irrational rationalization for keeping EVERYONE locked down going on forever just because Covid IS LIKELY GOING TO STAY WITH US, while the same respectable science still says the vast majority of Covid victims recover totally & at a clip comparable to influenza? Or, are we ready to cancel/ban games & players for flu outbreaks too? Jus’ askin’…
