Surprise Or Not, Non-Covid Deaths Now Roil Life Insurers

We’re now told life insurers suspect a rise in non-Covid deaths had a lot to do with delayed or outright lack of medical treatment for diseases affecting the heart, cardiovascular system, neurological disorders and even substance abuse. Surprised?

The WSJ put it this way: “US life insurers, as expected, made a large number of Covid death-benefit payouts last year [but] more surprisingly, many saw a jump in other death claims too. Industry executives and actuaries believe many of these other fatalities are tied to delays in medical care as a result of lockdowns in 2020, and then, later, people’s fears of seeking out treatment and trouble lining up appointments.”

Dunno about how “surprising” that was, however. As the article also noted, “from the early stages of the pandemic, many medical professionals have raised concerns about Americans’ untreated health problems, as Covid-19 put stress on the nation’s healthcare system.” Many politicians questioned the long-term impact of extended lockdown & other draconian anti-Covid measures, many of which are still in effect in many parts of the country.
