Tanking Music Celebs’ Sales Cursed?

Today’s woke music “stars” like Beyonce are reportedly “cursed” as recent sales keep falling. Is trend cause “no mo creative mojo”, an overcrowded or “fragmented” market? Or maybe the spoiled celebs’ music just sucks?

According to the WSJ, for instance, Beyonce’s newest single “Break My Soul” was favored by a “torrent of social media attention, but just a few weeks later, it has largely fallen flat.” I vote for the “they suck” theory and base it on my four 20-Something kids who tell me they’d rather listen to 1990’s, jazz or country music – “anything but today’s crap.” But, who am I to contribute to the debate that’s apparently rocking the music industry since I predicted “Rap Music Is a Passing Fad” when it first got popular in the 60’s. On the other hand, Tim Ingham of industry tracker Music Business Worldwide was quoted as saying, “We’re talking about ‘current’ music actually getting less popular … For whatever reason, ‘new’ music – be it a temporary trend, or a pattern with more permanence – is officially losing ground.”

The WSJ notes, among other worrisome sales stats, that “total consumption of current music in the US – album sales, track purchases & online streams of music less than 18 months old – shrunk by 1.4% in the first half” of this year, at least, so reports Luminate. Meanwhile, consumption of catalog music – music 18 months or older – grew 14% compared to last year. But, don’t expect “old-timers” like Adele or Ed Sheeran to reverse the new bummer universe as their newest “marquee albums” also “didn’t match prior efforts.”
