Teens Flying South For Football & Degree
High school seniors from the North are “flocking” to southern universities because they’re “eager to trade the political polarization ripping apart campuses in New England & NY for the sense of community epitomized by South’s football Saturdays.
As the WSJ report noted: “A growing number of high-school seniors in the North are making an unexpected choice for college. They are heading to Clemson, Georgia Tech, South Carolina , Alabama & other universities in the South.” Not that Ivy League schools are going begging for recruits that will be separated from their parents’ money in return for a prestigious diploma when job seeking one day. Yet, the column explained that the southern schools also can boast career opportunities without the bandaged heads, while giving the teens “an alluring Greek fraternity & sorority life & sports entertainment experience” like none other. Indeed, when was the last time Harvard football didn’t get laughed when compared to the SEC? But has anyone ever laughed at a degree from Duke, Tulane, Emory, Vanderbilt or William & Mary?
Then, to boot, parents eyes are undoubtedly lighting up when they see the far lower tuition costs a cool southern university charges in comparison. The numbers don’t lie. According to the WSJ article, “The number of Northerners going to Southern public schools went up 84% over the past two decades and jumped 30% from 2018 to 2022.
