Tik Tok’s Bell About To Be Rung?
A popular polka played at weddings in my youth at Chicago’s South Side Polonia Grove was “Tick Tick Tick Tock Goes the Clock on the Wall as We Are Dancing the Evening Away.” Did Congress just send Tik Tok a message it’s night is also dawning?
As the media coverage has noted the blockbuster news, a bitterly divided House sent the popular streaming platform & its Communist Chinese controllers a rare bipartisan 352-65 vote to force it to sever ties to the CCP or face a US ban. Who knows if the Senate will follow suit, especially after GOP presidential candidate Trump did a flip flop on whether to target Tik Tok in this fashion, citing “abuses” of similar if more “American” platforms.
Tik Tok & the CCP tried to pre-empt that vote in Congress with a massive PR & lobbying campaign hailing the “good” Tik Tok does for the average American schmo. You saw the flood of ads that hit our tv screens. That having failed, they are now threatening a First Amendment lawsuit. But, perhaps more importantly, the WSJ tells us in its, “TikTok’s American Growth Is Already Stalling,” that as the foreigners “battle lawmakers’ efforts to force a sale or ban, the app is facing business challenges & stronger competition.” No kidding. Will the Communists ever truly understand capitalism & its ironclad rule of the jungle, er, marketplace, that “What Goes Around Comes Around”?
