Trump’s Alternative to Gaza “Hell on Earth”
The main point missed by critics of the Gaza proposal floated by Trump is that it’s NOT an imperialistic US plan, but a peace plea built on economic development that could spread wealth & jobs around the perpetually war torn region …
… And, oh btw, the president is undoubtedly suggesting that the US could not only somehow “own” Gaza, but make billions on the deal by having American companies bidding on the endless projects envisioned. And, no, Trump’s still not suddenly in favor of US boots on the ground, it clearly being up to the Israelis and Palestinians to stop fighting, uphold their so-called cease fire. If there’s no peace, there are no Beachfront Gaza Condos. That latter point was made for No. 47 by the WSJ editors who recently noted, “Critics deride Trump’s idea, but what are they offering Palestinians?” The editors add that Trump’s idea, “however preposterous, does have the virtue of forcing the world to confront its hypocrisy over the fate of the Palestinian people.”
In contrast, the editors opine, “Mr. Trump expressed admirable sympathy for the Palestinians and their plight. The Gaza strip ‘has been a symbol of death and destruction for so many decades and so bad for the people anywhere near it.’ Who could disagree with that? It’s easy to dismiss this as the fantasy of a presidential huckster who imagines Trump condos on the Gaza Gold Coast. But is his idea so much worse than the staus quo that the rest of the world is offering?” At the end of the day, then, “perhaps [Trump’s] pitch will cause the rest of the world to do more to support a post-Hamas government in Gaza that would let Palestinians live in a territory that is better than hell on earth.”
