Trump’s Path to Greenland (or Bust)?
Trump wants to buy Greenland & a supposedly balking Denmark opens a “back channel” to see how much $ it can get? Whatever the price tag, it’d be worth it. Remember “Seward’s Alaskan Folly.”
As the WSJ recently noted, the president-elect’s interest in the “vast, ice-covered island reflects a global scramble for the Arctic.” Eat your hearts out, China, Russia. The sparsely populated island of 56K souls has a unique “strategic location on the edge of the Arctic – and a whole lot of mineral riches … at more than three times the size of Texas, Greenland has ample deposits,” in fact, “in rare earths, oil & gas, as well as its commanding position astride crucial trade & military arteries.” Give a kudo to climate change as it has ironically opened up maritime routes, thereby reordering “geopolitics at the top of the world.” There’s a reason why Russia has reopened dozens of Soviet military bases in the Arctic, while China, which was blocked not so long ago in its attempt to finance 3 airports on Greenland, has been expanding shipping routes through the melting ice with a particular eye on Greenland’s minerals “used in everything from phones to electric cars & military equipment.”
We’re told, of course, that Trump’s interest in Greenland, including not ruling out the possibility of using military force to make his dream come true, has “sparked outrage in Denmark as well as throughout the EU. Right. And Biden’s Sec of State Blinken blinked at the Alaska-type folly “that’s never going to happen.” Right again. That’s why more recent reports say Denmark is suddenly taking Trump’s trump card ($) seriously.
