Trump’s Rock Around the Clock Mindset

Gerald Seib recently waxed how President Trump is ‘using the powers of his office in an aggressive paternalistic way. He wondered, “Is an old form of intrusive government being replaced by a new one? One possible answer: Yes & no.

Let’s recall that the woke progressives over the last two decades literally fought in a revolutionary fashion to change not only American culture but its history. Seib called it the “Nanny State Mindset.” Their war was not only fought in The Swamp until many saw the US as a “bureaucracy” rather than a “democracy,” but in the nation’s universities, its court system, the legacy media, and corporate board rooms. And, that “movement” spread relentlessly, until the term “globalization” and “DEI” seemed to have replaced traditional religion and THE DEITY Itself. It wasn’t until the 2024 presidential election that enough people realized this was a hostile, if originally subtle, takeover of their core beliefs and faith in American Exceptionalism … and they voted by the millions for a change AWAY FROM THAT IMPOSED CHANGE. (Re)Enter Donald J. Trump in 2024 and Seib suggests the first three months of his relentless efforts to turn back the clock ironically mimics the Nannies with a just as aggressive “paternalistic Daddy State.

Yet, here’s the circular problem with the WSJ columnist’s insight: It is impossible to effectuate significant change in a democracy by constantly asking the invariably diverse voters how they’d like to bring about change, assuming they can ever fully agree on the change needed. As “last chance term” president, Trump was aware he had little time to MAGA as he envisioned it & his dreams called for even “unprecedented” measures. Even sounds a bit like a “progressive” justifying their/its agenda? For the lone independent reformer, however, hasn’t it always been a race against the clock?
