Trump’s TikTok Tactic Trumps Trump
A newly elected Trump had arguably seized the moral hi-ground from Dems but risks losing it by not enforcing Congress’s TikTok ban he once lobbied for. Did he suddenly turn into a scofflaw Biden when he slept in the WH again?
The WSJ’s editors opined as much in “Trump Gives TikTok an Illegal Amnesty.” As they reminded No. 47, he “took the oath of office Monday promising to faithfully execute the duties of his office, which include implementing the laws passed by Congress. Yet in one of his first acts as President, Mr. Trump effectively suspended a law requiring” TikTok to divest from its Chinese communist-controlled ByteDance by Jan. 19. Yeah, the law gives him 90 days to suspend the law IF a deal to sell it is in the works, but that isn’t the case. Mr. Trump can allude to “interest” in buying TikTok by Elon Musk and Larry Ellison, but neither has yet to make an offer. He also alludes to the US (gov’t? domestic company? Little Bo Peep?) keeping a “50% partnership interest” in a new TikTok, but as the WSJ points out, the law in question wouldn’t allow that.
Sure, the Deal-Maker of the Century may be doing a Broadway soft-shoe to give more time for a White Knight to emerge. But the Communists have insisted they won’t give up control of their Trojan Horse app. Hence, President Trump is risking valuable political capital & that moral high ground, let alone national security, if he pushes this TikTok thing much farther. On inauguration day, he waxed about how TikTok is just another app for kids to make a living at. Yet, make that “brainwashed” kids who were warned years ago that the ban was coming & are precisely the “kids” who protested, even rioted, and called No. 45 a “fascist” thanks in no small part to the Communist propaganda in social media.
