Van Life Reality Means No Horsing Around

As a sardine rather than propagandists on social media whether “No Showers, No Sleep [means] Van Life Isn’t as Cool as Instagram Makes It Seem.”

The WSJ piece recently noted that “With home prices so high, living on wheels seems a reasonable alternative [BUT] many find it isn’t.” In California, a Siena Juhlin conceded, “Everything is 10 times harder.” Finding a parking space can be a trip in itself, she noted. Nor is going for a day or two or three without a shower a picnic. Fixing the inevitable van break down can cost more than a new sun porch, too. And, sleeping on a board, even a padded one, needs getting used to. Then, again, trying to budget for skyrocketing gas prices or finding an electrical outlet for the space heater … We get the picture.

Still, speaking of pictures, insisted the die hard Juhlin, “Everything is also amazingly beautiful & rewarding.” She’s of course talking about the “mountain vistas” and panoramic “beaches” she’s visited along the way. But, couldn’t she have experienced those marvels by buying a cheap donkey or a kayak?
