Wolverines Wolf Down Trump’s Optimism

We’re told to “Understand Trump’s Staying Power With the White Working Class, Look to Michigan” & how its folks like No. 45’s “policies & personality.” I had a home for 10 yrs in Wolverine State. These folks are also pissed at progressive policies run amok.

As the WSJ article noted, “These blue-collar voters were for many years reliable Democrats, but in 2016 a big group of them, mostly white, helped Donald Trump capture the presidency …” They’ve remained loyal since, perhaps even grown in numbers. True, Trump lost Michigan to Biden in 2020. But, “Democrats made up the difference in white-collar suburbs” of Detroit. Meanwhile, the paper notes, “culture war issues like abortion & guns & LGBTQ rights … [not to mention the 2-yr wars over Ukraine & the year-long massacres taking place in Gaza] … have “peeled off” much of that Biden support today. So much so, that the Michigan "blue” is looking more like Northwestern “purple” as the 2024 election approaches.

On top of that, as polls have documented, once Democratic students sick of Biden’s age & Democratic blacks & Hispanics who feel Joe doesn’t remember his 2016 campaign promises or see the rampant crime in their streets, are suddenly added to the president’s pathetic approval ratings. Maybe it’s not so much a matter of “It’s the economy, stupid,” as “It’s the “bread & butter, old fool.” As Trump loyalists told WSJ: “I just love Trump’s enthusiasm & positivity; I like to see an American leader that says we can be great again, we can be number one again,” like the Michigan football team. As another said: Trump’s “policies shined. I made more money than I ever had. My money went further.”
