Yelling At Kids Cancels Their Psyches?
New study says a “hidden problem” in society is yelling at a kid causing long-term harm to their psyches. But, doesn’t the same problem “in plain sight” involve the abusive verbal treatment hurdled these days at ADULTS?
Put another way, isn’t it a matter of common sense that mocking, denigrating, bullying, or threatening another human being of ANY age … whether repeatedly or even once and by strangers as well as relations … poses a danger to him or her? Whether the abusive “yelp” is leveled in person, in print, over the telephone or online? Yet, as reported by Fox News, researchers from NC’s Wingate U & U College London found that “childhood verbal abuse (CVA) – primarily identified as yelling & screaming – could have negative effects on kids’ mental & physical health throughout their lifetimes.” They call for CVA to be “formally recognized as a form of emotional abuse.” Well, as the researchers noted, “emotional abuse” is already one of four recognized types of “child maltreatment,” so CVA would be a “subset” thereof.
But, again, why put an age limit on the obvious? Has there ever been any doubt verbally abusing ANYONE can be as damaging as physical abuse? Hasn’t our intuitions told us the old “sticks & stones” saw was always baloney & killing another’s self-esteem could be worse than killing their body? Didn’t the Colonials know this when tarring & feathering a political opponent? Ditto today’s social media screamers who aim to “cancel” a target?
